Dr. Christopher S. Frings, age 67, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008. Dr. Frings was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. A man of many talents, he devoted his lifelong love of learning to teaching and service. Born August 10, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, he received a Bachelor's degree from The University of Alabama and a Ph.D. in Clinical Chemistry from Purdue University followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. He was Director of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology at local clinical laboratories for 20 years prior to becoming a full time consultant and speaker in 1987. He was currently a clinical professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He authored over 150 publications. Each year for the past 20 years, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry has honored Dr. Frings with one of their outstanding speaker awards. He was a nationally recognized speaker having received the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation from the National Speakers Association. Dr. Frings was known to many as "Chris Frings the Master Magician". He enthusiastically entertained thousands of adults and children over the years culminating in being selected as the 2006 Volunteer of the Year at Children's Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Roberta A. Frings; mother, Norvelle N. Frings; children, Michael C. Frings and Dr. Mary E. Stocken; sister, Rev. Diane M. Snead; brothers, Laurance F. Frings and Mayor David M. Frings (Alabaster); and six grandchildren. Dr. Frings was preceded in death by his father, Raymond F. Frings.
